Limerick Youth Dance Company (LYDC) is a contemporary dance performance company which provides young people aged 12-19 with weekly dance training, contemporary based choreography practice and performance opportunities throughout the year.
LYDC is committed to the growth of their dancers and believe in the power of dance to guide young people in the development of self-discipline and strength of character.
LYDC aims to provide the experience of a professional performance company at youth level, creating group performance work of a high artistic standard, with and by young people of Ireland. Contemporary dance techniques and choreographic practices form the base of the artistic approach to devising performance works. Creating performance works of meaning and expression are at the heart of the practice, using the medium of dance to communicate ideas and experiences.
Weekly sessions are held on Saturdays from 15:00-18:30 in the Dance Limerick dance studio, 1-2 John's Square, Limerick, V94 RRH6
Additional or longer rehearsals may required on occasion in preparation for performances. Many performances that LYDC undertake will also be held outwith the regular class time, often requiring travel and occasionally overnight stay.
Sessions comprise of a warm up class and a creative / choreographic / rehearsal session:
Warm up sessions comprise of a variety of techniques depending on the choreographic practice being undertaken. Sessions can include contemporary dance techniques, ballet for contemporary dancers and yoga techniques.
Creative / choreographic / rehearsal sessions can comprise of improvisation, creative tasks, learned choreography and the rehearsal of existing vocabulary for performance.
As part of these sessions LYDC members will also be expected to:
Engage in critical and constructive observation sessions, where feedback and discussion is practiced.
Observe class exercises and other class members in a supportive and non-judgemental manner.
To be open and willing to receive coaching and direction.
Support other company members through their training and performance practice.
Encourage a love of dance and performance as a group.
